Which Businesses Need a Trade License?

Anyone running a grocery store, clothing outlet, electronics shop, or any form of retail business.

Businesses offering services like salons, repair workshops, fitness centers, coaching institutes, etc.

Small-scale or large-scale manufacturers and industrial units operating within city limits.

Owners of restaurants, cafes, food stalls, bakeries, sweet shops, etc., must obtain a trade license, in addition to FSSAI.

If the activity involves public interaction or use of machinery (e.g., baking, tailoring, or repair services), a trade license may be required.

Businesses operating godowns or storage spaces for goods.

Documents Required for Trade License

The documentation stage is often where applications face delays. Preparing all the necessary paperwork in advance can significantly speed up the process.

Generally, the required documents fall into categories:

 

i) Applicant’s ID Proof:Any government-issued photo ID, such as:

  • Aadhaar Card
  • Passport
  • Voter ID
  • Driving License

ii) Address Proof of the Business Premises: Documents confirming the location of the business, such as:

  • Lease/Rent Agreement
  • Property Tax Receipt
  • Utility Bill (in the name of the business owner or entity)
  • PAN Card of the applicant/company

i) For Companies:

  • Certificate of Incorporation
  • Memorandum of Association (MOA)
  • Articles of Association (AOA)

ii) For Partnership Firms:

  • Partnership Deed
  • Registration Certificate (if applicable)

iii) For Proprietorships:

  • Proprietorship Declaration or Certificate
  • Any government-issued document acknowledging proprietorship

These documents establish the legal structure and ownership of the business entity.

  • Legal Occupation of Land :May be required from the property owner (if rented), neighbors, or local authority (depending on the nature of the business)
  • Lease Agreement: Required if the business premises are rented
  • Property Tax Receipt: Required if the premises are owned by the applicant/entity.
  • Challan : if any payment is done 

Additional documents are required based on business operations, compliance, and property details.

  • Occupancy Certificate: Proof that the premises are legally occupied.
  • Business Plan: A  Brief document outlining the nature and scope of the business operations.
  • Layout Plan: Certified layout map of the premises.
  • Khata Certificate/Extract: Issued by the local municipal body verifying property records.
  • Affidavit or Declaration: In some cases, an affidavit stating the legitimacy of the business may be required.
